Guest network and internal network: why they must be separate

Visitors, personal phones and connected devices have no business on the same network as your data. Segmentation explained simply.

A flat network is an open door

When a visitor’s personal phone, the security camera and the accounting workstation share one network, each can potentially “see” the others. A compromised device — and cheap connected gadgets often are — becomes a foothold for exploring your file shares, printers and computers. Segmentation means splitting the network into isolated zones that communicate only when you allow it.

The three minimum zones for a small business

This separation also protects your compliance: the personal information you hold must not be reachable from a device you do not control. It is a simple technical measure that directly supports your Law 25 protection duties.

  • Internal network: workstations, servers, NAS, company printers. Full access to internal resources.
  • Guest network: visitors and personal devices. Internet only, no visibility into the internal network.
  • IoT network: cameras, thermostats, doorbells, TVs. Isolated, because they are rarely updated and often vulnerable.

How to implement it

Most business-grade routers and access points support multiple networks (SSIDs) with client isolation and firewall rules between zones. Setup is quick on suitable hardware; it is often impossible or flimsy on the ISP’s consumer router. The guest password changes periodically and never grants access to the admin interface.

SolutionsCW designs and configures this segmentation, documents zones and rules, and verifies through real testing that a guest device cannot reach your data. It is one of the best cost-to-protection fixes for a small business.
